The effects of parenting attitudes perceived by high school students on their interpersonal problems: Mediating effects of internalized shame and rejection sensitivity

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the mediating effects of internalized shame and rejection sensitivity on the relation between parenting attitude and interpersonal problems. The participants of the study were 714 high school students in first and second grade in G metropolitan city in Korea. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS and AMOS. The results of the study were as follows. First, parental warmth attitude was negatively correlated with interpersonal problems. And rejection and overprotective parenting attitudes were positively correlated with interpersonal problems. Second, in the effect of parents¡¯ emotional warmth on interpersonal problems, internalized shame and rejection sensitivity influenced interpersonal problems through dual mediation. Third, Internalized shame and rejection sensitivity were fully mediated in the process in which parental rejection attitude, and overprotection attitude affected interpersonal problems, This study is significant in that it showed that not only parents' warmth, rejective, and overprotective parenting attitudes but also internalized shame and rejection sensitivity are important factors in adolescents' interpersonal problems.
